Austin Ratliff is 1 of the 99%

Thirty students were recognized by the Board of Education during the first 99% Awards ceremony for the school year on Nov. 6. The 99% Awards recognize middle school and high school students who are making a contribution to their school by receiving good grades and having at least 90% attendance, but who may not be getting the recognition they deserve for doing the right thing. During the ceremony, teachers and counselors shared stories about each student who was nominated and explained why they were chosen for this recognition.

Wells Student honored at 99% Awards
Twenty-nine
students were recognized for "doing the right thing" during the final 99% Awards
ceremony for the school year. A student from each middle and high school was
recognized by the Board of Education on May 1.
The 99% Awards are
given to students who are making a contribution to their school by receiving
good grades and having at least 90% attendance, but who may not be getting the
recognition they deserve. A staff member from each school shared stories about
the student with the audience and highlighted why the student deserved to be
recognized.

Wells Special
Education Center staff celebrated Thanksgiving by providing a home cooked meal
to their students on Nov. 22.
This was the sixth year for the annual Thanksgiving dinner
with staff providing the
decorations, food and thankful atmosphere.
The dinner was coordinated by Toni Harden, Carol Hunt, and Teresa
Armitage along with help from paras Sabrina Waite, Jackie Skillman, and Chris
Brown and the entire staff. Volunteers from South City Baptist Church helped
serve and provided food for the event as well.

The 99% Awards recognize a student from each middle school and high school. Each school selected a student who will be honored. The awards are based on how the students are making a contribution to their school by receiving good grades and having at least 90% attendance, but who may not be getting the recognition they deserve for doing the right thing. At the ceremony, principals or school representatives will talk about each student who was nominated and why they were chosen for this recognition. The 99% Awards will be presented to students at the end of each grading period.
Four of our
very own "Tech Talons", Mario Rodriquez, Daniel Zerener, Jacob McGee &
Sean Montonye participated in
the Wichita Student Technology Leadership Conference on October 27, 2005 at JF-ISC. In all, 8 schools were represented by 49 students.
After eating lunch, and voting for a WSTL logo; each Tech Talon got to learn how
to use a Palm Pilot/handheld to create a business card and beam it to other
participants. Then they participated in 3 workshops covering "Sharing
Through the Portal", "Technology Integration" and "Leadership".
It was great to have some of our students involved in a WSTL event so soon after
the launch of our group!!

6th Grader, Jacob McGee won free Wendys Frostys for the group in a raffle!!!
On Wednesday, October 19, 2005,
Wells Cadet Mario Rodriquez took part in the 8th Grade Honor Cadet Competition.
Mario presented to the board of:

Mario had to present a packet that included his school transcript, a letter of
recommendation from a teacher, his leadership record, and a paper covering the
topic:
“How the Leadership Program has Helped Me to Become a Better Citizen.”
He was then asked a series of questions covering topics ranging from
citizenship, leadership, current events, and customs/courtesies.
Mario may not have been chosen the victor, but still represented us well!!!
